Incidence Rate in the Town of Barnstable
The average daily COVID-19 incidence rate of Town of Barnstable residents, calculated from case reports received during the past fourteen days, increased to an average of 9.35 new cases per day.
Case Counts
Town of Barnstable: 11,984 total cases (positive residents) cumulatively to date, 131 new cases during the last two weeks.
Barnstable County: 46, 796 cases cumulatively to date resulting in 710 deaths of Barnstable County residents, 17 deaths in the past two weeks.
Massachusetts: 1,959,694 cases of State of Massachusetts residents cumulatively to date, resulting in 21,053 confirmed deaths,
United States: According to John Hopkins University, there have been a total of 99,826,801 positive COVID-19 cases cumulatively in the United States resulting in 1,087,014 deaths nationwide as of today, December 16th.
Hospitalizations
Barnstable County Hospitalizations: The number of hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients has increased. Cape Cod Healthcare reported to us that, yesterday, on December 15th, there were a total of twenty-four (24) patients who were being treated for COVID-19 at Cape Cod and Falmouth hospitals. Two (2) of the twenty-four patients were in an intensive care unit (ICU) on that date.
Massachusetts Hospitalizations: According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, on December 13th, there were a total of 255 patients primarily hospitalized for COVID-19 in the Commonwealth. In total, there were 856 patients hospitalized with COVID -19. Of those 856 patients, 526 patients (61%) were reported to be fully vaccinated when they contracted COVID-19.
National Hospitalization Predictions: This week’s national ensemble predicts that the number of new daily confirmed COVID-19 hospital admissions will remain stable or will have an uncertain trend with 2,100 to 12,200 new confirmed COVID-19 hospital admissions likely to be reported on January 6 2023.
Deaths
Barnstable County Deaths: There were seventeen (17) deaths of Barnstable County residents during the past two weeks.
Massachusetts Deaths: There were eighty-one (81) new, confirmed deaths of Massachusetts residents during the past seven days. The average age of death was 80 years old.

National Death Predictions: This week’s national ensemble predicts that the number of newly reported COVID-19 deaths will remain stable or have an uncertain trend over the next 4 weeks, with 1,400 to 5,400 new deaths likely reported in the week ending January 7, 2023. The national ensemble predicts that a total of 1,091,000 to 1,105,000 COVID-19 deaths will be reported by this date.
Vaccination and Booster Status/ Barnstable County Residents
Eighty-one percent (81%) of the Barnstable County residents are fully vaccinated. Sixty-five percent (65%) of Barnstable County residents received at least one booster dose after being fully vaccinated, compared to 61% of the Massachusetts population.
Barnstable County Medium COVID-19 Community Level Designation & Prevention Steps
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to classify Barnstable County as being at a medium ○ COVID-19 community level. Community levels can be low, medium, or high and are determined by looking at hospital admissions and the total number of COVID-19 cases in an area.
The following prevention steps are recommended by the CDC:
- If you are at high risk for severe illness, talk to your healthcare provider about whether you need to wear a mask and take other precautions.
- Get tested if you have symptoms;
- Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines.
